Patrick Williams | 8th February 2011 THERE are 175 million people on Twitter, but it would seem the majority of the Sunshine Coast’s politicians are not among them. Only five of the Coast’s 11 combined state and federal MPs use the micro blogging website to open up and communicate with the world and their electorates in 140 characters or less at a time. On a state level, Steve Dickson (Buderim) Jarrod Bleijie (Kawana), Fiona Simpson (Maroochydore) and Peter Wellington (Nicklin) have a presence within the network. However, Mark McArdle (Caloundra), Andrew Powell (Glass House) and Glen Elmes (Noosa) are all missing from the Twittersphere. Of the Coast’s representatives in federal parliament, only Longman MP Wyatt Roy has welcomed the popular website into his life. The political boy wonder also appears to be the Coast’s most watched MP on Twitter, with 1776 users following his constant updates. Fairfax MP Alex Somlyay, Fisher MP Peter Slipper and Wide Bay MP and Nationals … Continue reading →

By Annabel Crabb Posted Tue Nov 23, 2010 7:18pm AEDT http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/11/23/3074499.htm It was Wyatt Roy, the tender new Member for Longman, who asked the question of the day today. You know Mr Roy. He is, at 20, the youngest person ever to be elected to Federal Parliament. Never has the seat of Longman returned such a short man, in fact; but what a man! Last night, Coalition colleagues at a fiercely exclusive corridor party (from which marauding journalists had to be repelled like so many Corey Worthingtons) were entranced by the news that Mr Roy is soon to be announced as GQ Magazine’s Man of the Year. Having initially faced a fusillade of teasing remarks, Mr Roy is now whispered about as a young man of significant potential. He no longer sits next to John Alexander, whose considerable height comparative to the Roy frame probably occasioned many of the jokes. A tiny Roy-themed action figure or waiter’s friend cannot be … Continue reading →

ABC Online website article The 20-year-old LNP candidate for the south-east Queensland seat of Longman has addressed a seniors’ forum on Bribie Island, south of the Sunshine Coast. If Wyatt Roy wins the seat of Longman, he will become Australia’s youngest federal MP. More than 150 National Seniors Australia members gathered at the Bribie RSL this morning to quiz Mr Roy, along with the incumbent ALP Member John Sullivan and the Greens’ candidate Rod Blair. They covered issues from health to recreational fishing zones. Despite the age gap, Mr Roy was generally well received. The ALP holds the seat of Longman by a margin of 1.9 per cent. National Seniors Australia chairman Everald Compton says the forums are being held in 13 marginal seats. Mr Compton says economic security and the state of hospitals are of great concern to seniors. “The issue of the state of hospitals and the health system is a crucial situation and 25 per cent of … Continue reading →

“People want someone who’s out there, who’s proactive, who’s going to be held accountable, that brings some sort of conviction to the job. Voters are far smarter than just looking at numbers. They’re going to judge me on what I say, what I do, what our policies are.” the QWeekend website //

Caboolture News Article, Wednesday 23rd June 2010 LNP candidate for Longman Wyatt Roy believes his Labor opponent, John Sullivan should endorse his plan for after-hours GP clinics in Caboolture on Bribie Island. Mr Roy has proposed federally funded clinics run by the Moreton Bay General Practice Network to solve the impasse caused by the collapse of Labor Party plans for a Super-Clinic in Longman. “The more the Labor Member for Longman pushes his failed design for a Super GP Clinic, the further he gets from finding a real, practical solution to the healthcare problems facing our region,” Mr Roy said last week. “The Super GP Clinic model has been fundamentally rejected by local practitioners. “The impasse in Longman is typical of this entire Labor Party program. That’s why from Labor’s promise of 36 super clinics in 2007, only three clinics have been built. “In 2010, Labor has shamelessly promised more Super GP Clinics, but in Longman, its member will be … Continue reading →

Caboolture News Article, Wednesday 23rd June 2010 The message on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s super mining tax arrived on the streets of Caboolture last week with a 40ft campaign bus which stated it took a super bus to fight the super tax. LNP candidate for Longman Wyatt Roy said the Labor MP Jon Sullivan was wrong to be blasé about a significant new tax that did not have the confidence of 70% of voters. My Roy said the poll confirmed that the mining tax was a real issue for the locals in Longman. “Instead of blaming the media, Mr Sullivan should be listening to the voice of the locals,” he said. “Longman residents realise that this is not just a tax on mining. It will increase the operating costs of local business, the cost of living and threaten the super funds of workers and retirees and push up the cost of building materials. “Every time you fuel up in Caboolture … Continue reading →

June 16, 2010 Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has thrown his support behind a 20-year-old LNP candidate, quashing speculation the opposition leader was pushing for a change. Mr Abbott yesterday rejected speculation he wanted to draft a more experienced hand to challenge the Labor-held federal seat of Longman, north of Brisbane, rather than recently pre-selected political prodigy Wyatt Roy. Mr Abbott said Mr Roy was the best available candidate for the seat of Longman and he would have his full support at the upcoming federal election. // ,addSmall: true ,smallText: “Advertisement: Story continues below” }) ); } ); // ]]>“Everyone who has met Wyatt is impressed,” Mr Abbott said. “I think he has ample capacity to be an effective local member and make a significant contribution to the national polity.” A senior LNP source had earlier told brisbanetimes.com.au Mr Abbott did not want Mr Roy running for Longman.
