Burpengary Community Meeting

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Invitation to attend a community meeting in Burpengary to discuss bat colonies in the area I have been contacted by some residents regarding a bat colony in Burpengary. Residents raised concerns about the size of the bat colony, and proximity to local horse riding groups, particularly in light of last week’s outbreak of Hendra Virus in Beachmere. I share the concerns of these residents, and at my request the State Shadow Minister for Environment, Mr Andrew Powell, has agreed to meet with concerned local residents to discuss this issue. I would like to invite you to be a part of this discussion, at a community meeting on Thursday 20th October at 3.30pm at the Burpengary Equestrian Centre (350 Rowley Rd, Burpengary). All members of the local community who are concerned about this matter are welcome to attend, and I encourage you to invite others who may be interested. Constituency Statement about the Carbon Tax and Longman Costs of Living

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

1 March 2011 | E&EO Mr Deputy Speaker on 20 August 2010, the day before the election, the Prime Minister categorically ruled out the introduction of a carbon tax. The front page of the Australian on that day quoted the Prime Minister as saying, “I rule out a carbon tax.” Mr Deputy Speaker, since the election circumstances have not changed for my constituents. My electorate comprises what is commonly known as the mortgage belt of outer Brisbane. Many of my constituents are struggling to make ends meet in the face of increasing cost of living pressures. The price of water has gone up, the price of electricity has gone up, the price of fuel has gone up, the cost of public transport has gone up. It is getting harder and harder for ordinary Australians to make ends meet. Ordinary Australians are having to work harder and harder to achieve the aspirations we have previously taken for granted. Forum Resolves Environment Minister needs to review Pumicestone Passage

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

A forum on the Sunshine Coast last night resolved that development on the Pumicestone Passage should not go ahead until the Federal Environment Minister had assessed the environmental impact on the Pumicestone Passage. Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, said that it was essential that the environmental impact under the RAMSAR Convention and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act be assessed. “At my request last week Shadow Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt and local MPs inspected the Pumicestone Passage. “We want to ensure that the fragile ecological balance of the Pumicestone Passage is not disturbed by any development on the Passage. “We want to see appropriate sustainable development, subject to the right checks and balances. “This is the same process we saw win Traveston, when a brutish Labor government tried to avoid environmental concerns,” said Mr Roy. After inspecting the Passage, Mr Hunt said he and the Federal Opposition were well aware of the impending danger to Pumicestone Passage. … Continue reading

Shadow Environment Minister assesses environmental impact on Pumicestone Passage with Wyatt Roy

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Greg Hunt, Shadow Federal Minister for Environment yesterday assessed the environmental impact of development on the Pumicestone Passage with Federal Member for Longman, Wyatt Roy. Mr Roy said he was delighted that the Shadow Environment Minister Greg Hunt was able to look at the possible impacts of development on the Passage first hand. “The Pumicestone Passage has certain protections under the international convention on wetlands known as the Ramsar Convention.  Therefore, any development which might affect the wetlands has federal implications. “I am very pleased that Greg Hunt had this opportunity to see the area first-hand, to discuss the proposed development, and that will help inform him when it comes before the Federal Parliament. “In a development in an area as environmentally important as this, it is essential that the effect on the local wildlife and flora is very carefully assessed,” Wyatt Roy said. Mr Hunt said he and the Federal Opposition were well aware of the impending danger to … Continue reading

Practical action for the future – not a big tax

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Wyatt Roy and the Liberal Natonal Party stand for real action to tackle the complex challenges of climate change, energy security and water scarcity. We will not allow Mr Rudd to impose a big tax on everything that won’t bring down emissions but will increase family taxes and cost jobs.  Emissions Reduction Fund To facilitate direct action, a Liberal National Government will establish an Emissions Reduction Fund to support CO2 emissions reduction activity by business and industry. Through the Fund, we will support 140 million tonnes of abatement per annum by 2020 to meet our 5 per cent target. This is a once in a century replenishment of our soil carbon. Through the Fund we will also make incentives available for the oldest and most inefficient power stations to reduce their emissions in an orderly manner which protects jobs, electricity prices and energy security. ‘Clean Energy Hubs’ will also be established in the LaTrobe, Hunter and Central Queensland regions. The Emissions Reduction Fund … Continue reading
