Burpengary Community Meeting

Invitation to attend a community meeting in Burpengary to discuss bat colonies in the area I have been contacted by some residents regarding a bat colony in Burpengary. Residents raised concerns about the size of the bat colony, and proximity to local horse riding groups, particularly in light of last week’s outbreak of Hendra Virus in Beachmere. I share the concerns of these residents, and at my request the State Shadow Minister for Environment, Mr Andrew Powell, has agreed to meet with concerned local residents to discuss this issue. Wyatt’s Speech about Health Services in Longman

Adjournment Debate Speech – Longman Health Services, 13 October 2011 E&OE Mr Speaker, the state of health services in my region is woeful. The Caboolture Hospital is the only health service in the region providing 24 hour care, and it is simply not keeping up with the demand. Mr Speaker I have spoken many times about the need for increased health services in our region. My electorate is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, and our community has every right to expect adequate access to quality health services. Yet my office is contacted daily by people who have waited hours in emergency at the Caboolture Hospital; people who are older, people with babies, people with mental illness. Mental Health Community Meeting

I’m holding a community forum to discuss Mental Health and Ageing services in our community on Wednesday 3rd August. I have invited Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells to discuss the critical issues surrounding service provision of mental health and ageing in our region. All members of the community are welcome to attend the meeting with Senator Fierravanti-Wells, however RSVPs are essential.  To RSVP, contact my office on 5428 7755. Feedback from the meeting will directly inform Coalition policy, in order to improve local services. I am determined to keep the issue of improvements to mental health services in our region on the national agenda. Anyone who has something to contribute, please come along and have your say.

Member’s Statement: Longman Carers Forum

Mr Deputy Speaker, on Thursday last week I had the privilege of spending some time with some of the most selfless people in my local community. A large number of carers – these carers organised respite care and made other arrangements so that they could share their stories with me, and I am very grateful for that. I thank everyone who attended and revealed their concerns with me. Mr Deputy Speaker, the stories I heard served as a timely reminder to me that the work of carers is in many cases forgotten, undervalued and taken for granted. As a society we take for granted that people are going to care selflessly for those they love. Carers provide countless hours of unpaid work – work that would otherwise place a significant burden on government. Carers need a hand up not a hand out; they deserve a fair go. Media Release: Wyatt takes local health concerns to Canberra

Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, yesterday spoke to Parliament about local health issues. Mr Roy spoke about the inadequacy of current health services, and voiced the issues raised by his constituents at last week’s local health forum. Mr Roy called on the government to urgently look at Longman health services, particularly mental health services. “I said I wanted to bring the concerns of my constituents to Canberra rather than imposing Canberra on my constituents and I continue to strongly believe that to be my role,” Mr Roy said in his speech. 9th February, 2011        |       E&EO Mr Speaker, on 10 February a community health forum was run in my electorate of Longman.  I thank the Shadow Minister for Health, Peter Dutton, the state Shadow Minister for Health, Mark McArdle, and State Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health, Drug Strategy and Health Personnel, Mr Andrew Powell, Member for Glasshouse, for their attendance and support in addressing the concerns expressed by the attendees.  The forum was organised in partnership with Lisa France, LNP candidate for Pumicestone and was also attended by Darren Grimwade, LNP candidate for Morayfield. Joint Media Release: LNP Team Listen to Hospital Concerns at Health Forum

A community health forum today revealed the urgent need for improvement to essential local health services. LNP Candidates, Lisa France and Darren Grimwade, Federal Member for Longman Wyatt Roy, and State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, today hosted a health forum to listen to residents’ concerns about the Caboolture Hospital. Guest speakers Federal Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing Peter Dutton, and State Shadow Minister for Health Mark McArdle were on hand to provide facts about the Caboolture Hospital. Transcript of Wyatt speaking in Parliament I want to take this opportunity to inform the Committee about two examples – two of many – in the electorate of Longman where local infrastructure has been overlooked by the State Government of Queensland. The first relates to the Caboolture Hospital. During the election campaign the critical situation facing local hospital services in Caboolture was probably the local issue most often raised with me.  The adequacy of local health services is the most important issue in Longman – without question.  It is raised with me on a daily basis by locals, whether they are people using the hospital or doctors and nurses working there. The lack of provision for rehabilitation, the constant requirements of ambulances to ramp at the local hospital, and the lack of beds and essential services. $60 Million for Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre in Caboolture for Frontline Mental Health Services

A Coalition Government will establish an Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) in Caboolture as part of its $1.5 billion plan to expand frontline mental health services across Australia. Funding of $60 million would be provided to establish and operate the EPPIC centre which would serve the residents of the Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Federal electorates of Longman, Petrie and Dickson. The Shadow Minister for Health Peter Dutton and the Liberal National Party candidate for Longman Wyatt Roy announced the Coalition commitment which will provide critically needed services to young people of the region and, importantly, relieve pressure on Caboolture Hospital and its Emergency Department. An EPPIC centre provides 24 hour crisis care and ongoing outpatient services. ABC Online website article The 20-year-old LNP candidate for the south-east Queensland seat of Longman has addressed a seniors’ forum on Bribie Island, south of the Sunshine Coast. If Wyatt Roy wins the seat of Longman, he will become Australia’s youngest federal MP. More than 150 National Seniors Australia members gathered at the Bribie RSL this morning to quiz Mr Roy, along with the incumbent ALP Member John Sullivan and the Greens’ candidate Rod Blair. They covered issues from health to recreational fishing zones. Despite the age gap, Mr Roy was generally well received. The ALP holds the seat of Longman by a margin of 1.9 per cent.
