Burpengary Community Meeting

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Invitation to attend a community meeting in Burpengary to discuss bat colonies in the area I have been contacted by some residents regarding a bat colony in Burpengary. Residents raised concerns about the size of the bat colony, and proximity to local horse riding groups, particularly in light of last week’s outbreak of Hendra Virus in Beachmere. I share the concerns of these residents, and at my request the State Shadow Minister for Environment, Mr Andrew Powell, has agreed to meet with concerned local residents to discuss this issue. I would like to invite you to be a part of this discussion, at a community meeting on Thursday 20th October at 3.30pm at the Burpengary Equestrian Centre (350 Rowley Rd, Burpengary). All members of the local community who are concerned about this matter are welcome to attend, and I encourage you to invite others who may be interested. If you have any questions prior to the meeting, please feel free … Continue reading

Wyatt’s speech to the Carbon Tax Legislation

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Speech to the Clean Energy Bill 2011 E&OE………………………………………………………… I rise to voice my strong opposition to the Labor government’s carbon tax. There is no denying that climate change is a significant challenge facing Australia—indeed, facing the world. It is a challenge that deserves a response. I note that the members opposite are trying to detract from this response. They are trying to mislead the Australian people by making this debate one based on ideology rather than a policy debate seeking pragmatic and commonsense solutions. Let me make something clear: there is no dispute about the goal of reducing carbon emissions by five per cent by 2020. What is up for debate is the best way for us to achieve this reduction in emissions, and what is important in this debate is the cost to our economy: the personal cost to jobs, to families and to small businesses—the forgotten Australians that the Labor Party has walked away from, the forgotten Australians … Continue reading

Speech about the Carbon Tax

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Parliamentary Speech about the Carbon Tax 14 September 2011 E&OE Yesterday the Labor government introduced 18 bills that will give effect to the introduction of the carbon tax from 1 July 2011. The introduction of the bills to this House represents a breach of trust and wilful disregard for the Australian people. The bills represent a major change in this nation—one where the Australian people have been denied their fundamental right to have a say. Since the Prime Minister announced that there would be a carbon tax in February of this year in direct contravention of her promise just days before the last election, my office has been inundated with concerns about the tax and the effect that it will have on families and local businesses.  Unlike this Labor government, the coalition has been listening to the forgotten Australians about their views on the carbon tax. My friend and colleague the Leader of the Opposition joined me last week in … Continue reading

Julia Gillard’s carbon tax: a bad tax based on a lie

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

“Yesterday in Parliament, the Prime Minister introduced legislation for the carbon tax that she promised we would never have under her government,” Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, said today.  Julia Gillard said today that the vote on her carbon tax legislation was so that “every member in this place can be judged.” This is the same Prime Minister who said six days before the last election “there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead.”  Mr Roy said that the Parliament was being asked to support a carbon tax for which it has no mandate. “It would be a travesty of democracy for the Prime Minister to ram this bad tax through this Parliament, without sufficient time for examination,” Mr Roy said. “The Labor-Green carbon tax will drive up prices, threaten jobs and do nothing for the environment. It is a great big new tax on everything, and every year it will just go up and up … Continue reading

Labor’s Carbon Tax

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

The Labor-Green carbon tax will drive up prices, threaten jobs and do nothing for the environment. Australians will pay more for everything under Julia Gillard’s carbon tax – the biggest and most punitive carbon tax in the world. Our commitment to the Australian people is that we will do everything in our power to fight this toxic tax. We will oppose it in opposition and rescind it in government. Constituency Statement about the Carbon Tax and Longman Costs of Living

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

1 March 2011 | E&EO Mr Deputy Speaker on 20 August 2010, the day before the election, the Prime Minister categorically ruled out the introduction of a carbon tax. The front page of the Australian on that day quoted the Prime Minister as saying, “I rule out a carbon tax.” Mr Deputy Speaker, since the election circumstances have not changed for my constituents. My electorate comprises what is commonly known as the mortgage belt of outer Brisbane. Many of my constituents are struggling to make ends meet in the face of increasing cost of living pressures. The price of water has gone up, the price of electricity has gone up, the price of fuel has gone up, the cost of public transport has gone up. It is getting harder and harder for ordinary Australians to make ends meet. Ordinary Australians are having to work harder and harder to achieve the aspirations we have previously taken for granted. Wyatt’s Parliamentary Speech to Condolence Motion for Flood Victims

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

8th February 2011      |      E&EO Mr Speaker, I extend my deepest sympathy and that of my constituents to those who lost people they love in the terrible events of recent weeks in Queensland.  We grieve with you and for you.  I also extend our sympathies to those who have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods which held so many memories of lives well lived.  So many irreplaceable things that people will miss: that child’s painting from pre-school, that gift from a birthday a long time ago, that irreplaceable photo.  As someone who has experienced the loss of a home I can empathise.  So many homes have been irreparably damaged.  The water has taken people’s sanctuaries and places of safety away and so many have been left displaced. Mr Speaker, Australia and the rest of the world has been viewing the heartbreaking images of communities throughout Queensland that have been devastated by the floods.  No one help but be touched by the … Continue reading

Forum Resolves Environment Minister needs to review Pumicestone Passage

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

A forum on the Sunshine Coast last night resolved that development on the Pumicestone Passage should not go ahead until the Federal Environment Minister had assessed the environmental impact on the Pumicestone Passage. Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, said that it was essential that the environmental impact under the RAMSAR Convention and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act be assessed. “At my request last week Shadow Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt and local MPs inspected the Pumicestone Passage. “We want to ensure that the fragile ecological balance of the Pumicestone Passage is not disturbed by any development on the Passage. “We want to see appropriate sustainable development, subject to the right checks and balances. “This is the same process we saw win Traveston, when a brutish Labor government tried to avoid environmental concerns,” said Mr Roy. After inspecting the Passage, Mr Hunt said he and the Federal Opposition were well aware of the impending danger to Pumicestone Passage. … Continue reading
